Know what medications you take
- Keep a complete list of your medicines, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins or herbal supplements.
- Include each drug's strength, quantity, frequency and what you're taking it for.
Review your medications
- Review your medication list regularly with your doctor and pharmacist. Tell them whenever you start or stop taking any medicine, even if another doctor has told you to start or stop it
- Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medication, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins or herbal supplements for possible interactions
- Try to use the same pharmacy to fill all of your prescriptions to help avoid the possibility of drug duplications, interactions, or adverse side affects
Take your medications regularly
- Use a seven-day pillbox to help you remember to take your medications regularly
- Get your prescriptions refilled before you run out. Mark your calendar with the refill date and be sure to allow time for your pharmacy or mail-order service to process your order
Manage your medications with our medication safety program
Sometimes chronic conditions are treated with several medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins or herbal supplements. Taking multiple medications can increase the risk of drug duplication, interactions, adverse side effects, and cost.
Our Medication Safety Program offers three great tools for members taking five or more chronic medications:
- A brochure about multiple medication risks, the importance of knowing all your medication names, why you're taking them and how you should be taking them
- A handy My Medication List to keep track of all your medications
- A brown paper bag for taking your medications to your doctor for a thorough medication review
If you have any questions about this program, call the Customer Service number on the back of your ID card.
